As Ursula von der Leyen is scrambling to overcome the Liberal-Green opposition to the nomination of Raffaele Fitto, current minister in the Meloni government, as one of the executive vice-presidents of the EU Commission, current Commissioner Thierry Breton threw a monkey wrench into its wheels by announcing his resignation today. Ursula von der Leyen has already postponed by one week the presentation of the new Commission due to the vetoes on Fitto, and this threatens to delay it further.

Breton, Commissioner for the Internal Market, the Digital Services, Defense and Space, has accused von der Leyen of mismanagement and of wanting to get rid of him for “personal reasons.”
