The political process in Germany has accelerated, as the entire Green leadership resigned on Sept. 25, while Sahra Wagenknecht called on the Free Democrats (FDP) to leave the Federal government in order to preserve its “dignity.”
Green Party co-chairs Ricarda Lang and Omid Nouripour announced the resignation of the entire party executive. Nouripour spoke of the party’s “deepest crisis in a decade.” Both will remain in office until the upcoming party conference in November. The decision comes after the heavy electoral defeats in the European elections, in Germany’s states of Saxony, Thuringia and Brandenburg, and an obvious collapse in national polls. Consistency would seem to require that Green party ministers Habeck (Economy) and Baerbock (Foreign Affairs), the main responsibles for the loss of voters, also resign.
