Iran's Security Director Proposes a New BRICS Security Format

Speaking Sept. 12 at the BRICS security forum in St. Petersburg, attended by high-level security experts from many BRICS nations, the Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Ali Akbar Ahmadian, proposed that BRICS create a new security framework, or “BRICS Security Commission” that should function globally, in parallel with economic cooperation. This would aim “to eliminate the weaknesses and gaps in the existing global security system,” Iran’s ISNA news agency reported him saying Sept. 12.

He emphasized that steps taken so far by the BRICS on the road toward a more just multipolar world represents a “historic and appreciable action.” But, he added, there are still “strong and long steps” to be taken “with each other’s participation and synergy.” Because of members’ common interests and the fact that they face common threats, he said, there is a basis for wider cooperation in various fields. This situation must be “recognized and expressed with a more intelligent and accurate look,” he emphasized.
