Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a meeting with Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council of the Republic of Sudan Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, where Lavrov called for an end to hostilities in Sudan as soon as possible.
“The conversation focused on the situation in Sudan in the context of the ongoing military confrontation between the military and the so-called Rapid Support Force. The Russian side underscored the need to end the hostilities as soon as possible and start a broad national dialogue,” the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement about the meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly, reported TASS.
“Various aspects of further development of traditionally friendly Russian-Sudanese relations were discussed,” the statement says, adding the sides “reaffirmed their mutual determination to maintain active foreign policy coordination within the framework of the UN and other international platforms.”
It is significant that Lavrov held this meeting with General Al Burhan, whose government continues to be under attacks by the so-called Rapid Support Forces led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, who launched a rebellion against the government in April, 2023. Lavrov has never met with Dagalo, nor has Dagalo requested a meeting, since he is considered being clandestinely backed by the U.S. and particularly Great Britain through the United Arab Emirates. The RSF is also reportedly being supported by foreign mercenaries.
Meanwhile in Sudan, the Army launched an offensive against the RSF on Sept. 25 in the capital of Khartoum—which is currently being terrorized by the RSF. The RSF partially controls the city and had forced the government to relocate to Port Sudan. The army reportedly re-entered the city in force.
The army also launched a ground attack on Singa, the capital of Sennar State, and conducted airstrikes on El Daein, the capital of East Darfur State, both of which are considered RSF strongholds, according to Sputnik.
