A major effort is underway at the United Nations for the General Assembly to act under the “Uniting for Peace” resolution (377) to demand an end to Israel’s violations of orders by the International Court of Justice.

The Palestinian Authority Mission to the UN posted a joint letter from the Arab Group, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the Non-Aligned Movement to the current President of the UN General Assembly requests that the General Assembly’s tenth emergency special session be resumed “to enable the membership to consider urgent-follow up on the Advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the legal consequences arising from Israel’s policies and practices in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.…”

The signatories of the letter request that the General Assembly reconvene on September 17, with action to be taken on September 18, in accordance with the 1950 UNGA Resolution 377 (V) “Uniting for Peace.”

The Palestinian Authority is reportedly circulating a draft resolution for action next week. It welcomes the ICJ opinions, demands that Israel “end without delay its unlawful presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory,” demands for a right of return of all those displaced since the June 1967 borders, and calls upon UN member nations to cease support for Israel’s military activities in those areas, among other things.
