Mali’s Foreign Minister Calls Out Ukraine's Support for Terrorism in Africa

Ukraine’s support for terrorists was called out during the United Nations General Assembly by Mali’s Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop, who expressed criticism of the UN Security Council for failing to take action against Ukraine’s overt support for terrorism in Africa. Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, as the members of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), had presented a letter in August to the UN Security Council, requesting it take action against Ukraine for its avowed support for Mali terrorists who attacked Malian security forces. Diop stated: “We call on the Security Council to take appropriate responsibilities in the face of this deliberate choice by Ukraine in order to prevent subversive actions that threaten our stability.”

While noting that the UN Secretary General had condemned the terrorist attack on the capital of Mali on Sept. 17, Diop explained that no real action had followed. “All states must act in accordance with their international obligations to ensure that those responsible for these crimes, as well as their financiers and sponsors, are held accountable,” the top diplomat said.

He also reiterated that AES had called for interested parties to stop “using terrorist groups as tools and destabilizing sovereign states.”
