Most leaders in Europe have responded with alarm and concern in the wake of Israel’s assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah on Sept. 27 in the town of Dahiyeh, south of Beirut. The Lebanese Health Ministry noted that the bombings leveled six apartment buildings, killing 6 and injuring 91 people, as EuroNews reported.
• In France, the Foreign Ministry announced that it is in contact with Lebanese authorities in a effort to stabilize the situation, while “former MEP Jean-Luc Mélenchon said the assassination of Nasrallah ‘is one more step towards the invasion of Lebanon and general war.’”
• Türkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan condemned Israel’s attacks in Lebanon as part of what he called a policy of “genocide, occupation, and invasion.”
• President Masoud Pezeshkian of Iran asserted that the U.S. couldn’t deny its complicity, and “Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared five days of mourning and called on all Muslims to rise against Israel. He said Nasrallah’s death ‘will not go unavenged.’”
• The Russian Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the killing, stating: “This forceful action is fraught with even greater dramatic consequences for Lebanon and the entire Middle East.”
