“Switzerland welcomes the China-Brazil peace initiative for Ukraine,” the Swiss SWI news agency reported on Saturday. SWI reported that Nicolas Bideau, the chief spokesman for the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, had told the Keystone-SDA news agency Sept. 27 that Switzerland supports the principles of the China-Brazil initiative because it calls for a ceasefire and a political solution to the conflict. SWI added that Bideau said (in paraphrase) that “the initiative is important because it offers an alternative to the bellicose speeches made this week at the UN by both the Ukrainian and Russian sides.
He confirmed that Switzerland had attended the meeting held that day by China and Brazil on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly with the goal of creating a broader “Friends of Peace” group around their proposed roadmap for peace.
“We took part in this meeting as an observer and we support this dynamic,” Bideau told Reuters. Switzerland’s view of the Chinese-Brazilian proposal, first issued in May, had shifted with the addition of a reference to the UN Charter, he explained: “For us, this translates into a significant change in our view of these initiatives. A concrete diplomatic effort organized by the Sino-Brazilian group could be of interest to us.”
The Zelenskyy regime went ballistic, as just last June, Switzerland had hosted Ukraine’s “peace” conference, which excluded Russia and was intended only to line up nations behind its position that Russia is a pariah nation to which no one should talk. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry acknowledged it was “disappointed” with the Swiss decision. “We call on the Swiss Confederation and all countries supporting international law and the UN Charter to avoid participating in so-called ‘peace initiatives’ that can only complicate achieving a comprehensive, just and sustainable peace for Ukraine, it stated.
