In the process of former President Donald Trump finally agreeing yesterday to meet with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which he did on Sept. 27, Trump made public Zelenskyy’s curious supplication. Sounding at times like an awkward adolescent, Zelenskyy wrote:

“Dear Donald, I hope you’re doing well. I recall our recent phone call—it was really good. All of us in Ukraine want to end this war with a just peace. And we know that without America this is impossible to achieve. That’s why we have to strive to understand each other and remain in close contact. You know I always speak with great respect about everything connected to you, and that’s how it should be.”

Of course, it was only earlier this week that Zelenskyy explained that “Trump doesn’t really know how to stop the war even if he might think he knows how.” And as far as having great respect about everything connected to Trump, Zelenskyy tagged Trump’s running mate J.D. Vance as “dangerous” and “too radical”—language plenty sufficient these days to point a gunman in Vance’s direction.
