Berlin’s Christian Democrat Mayor Wegner wanted it, but his Social Democrat coalition partner and the opposition were against a Berlin maglev, so that the project still envisaged in Spring 2023 will probably not be realized. The Berlin city-state administration (Senate) is no longer pursuing the plan, according to Radio Berlin Brandenburg (RBB).
According to an answer from the Senate Department for Mobility to a question from the Left Party, no maglev feasibility study is planned, which would be a prerequisite for the project. The inquiry was provided to RBB.
Kristian Ronneburg, transport policy spokesman for the Left Party parliamentary group, referred to the €1 billion deficit in the state budget on the one hand, and, on the other hand, he referred to the current financial crisis at Berlin Transport Authority (BVG). “It is therefore necessary to use all resources for a properly functioning public transport system and not to invest them in half-baked lobby projects,” said Ronneburg.
