After 140 years of deploying coal energy, Great Britain will close its last electricity-producing coal plant this week, in southwest Ratcliffe-on-Soar. Energy Minister Michael Shanks said that Britain would become a super-power in clean energy, including wind and nuclear power.
Under the previous government, more than €300 million was planned to help fund production of advanced nuclear fuel. The country currently produces 16.1% of its electricity from eight advanced gas-cooled reactors and one pressurized water reactor. Two new ERP-1750 (1,630 MW each) should be completed in 2029. The owners are British EDF Energy (Framatome) at 70%, and the China General Nuclear Power Group.
