Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian and French President Emmanuel Macron yesterday discussed ways to stop fighting and establish a ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanese Hezbollah resistance movement, reported IRNA. The Iranian President said that his country always wants security to be maintained in the region, and welcomes a ceasefire in order to end the ongoing fighting. He said that Iran even exercised restraint after Israel’s July 31 assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, in response to a promise by Western leaders to establish a ceasefire in Gaza and in the hope that further killings of innocent people are stopped. However, Pezeshkian added, the Israeli regime intensified attacks in Gaza and expanded the conflict into Lebanon, showing that it does not abide by any humanitarian and international law.
The French readout was considerably different. “Regarding the regional situation, the President of the Republic stressed Iran’s responsibility to support a general de-escalation and to use its influence in this regard with the destabilizing actors who are receiving its support to move towards a ceasefire in both Gaza and Lebanon,” it said.
