NATO Says ‘Not Now’ to Zelenskyy’s Demand for Invitation To Join Alliance

The first point in Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s so-called “Victory Plan” is his demand for an invitation to join NATO “right now,” but NATO’s response remains “some day, but not yet.”

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte told reporters yesterday that the Alliance is already doing plenty to bring Ukraine closer to NATO. “So, the work we are doing together is making Ukraine stronger, more interoperable with NATO and better prepared than ever to join our Alliance,” he said. “And I believe that all this work clearly constitutes a bridge to NATO membership. Ukraine will join the Alliance, of course, when the time is right. And we will discuss, of course, also this item in Zelenskyy’s victory plan.”
