Politico Observes, U.S. and Germany ‘Slow-Walking’ Ukraine's Request To Join NATO

The concern over a full-scale war between Russia and NATO finds the U.S. and Germany refusing to accede to Ukraine’s call for immediate membership into NATO. Politico, yesterday, citing four unnamed U.S. and NATO officials, reported that Berlin and Washington are “slow-walking” the matter, as “key alliance members are worried about getting ensnared in a war with Russia.” On the record, the U.S. Ambassador to NATO Julianne Smith told Politico that the bloc “has not, to date, reached the point where it is prepared to offer membership or an invitation to Ukraine.”

In that context, Politico cites previous comments by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, saying that it was his duty to prevent the Ukraine conflict from spiraling into a full-scale war between Russia and NATO. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had made the immediate entry of Ukraine into NATO a key part of his so-called “Victory Plan.”
