The irrationality of the U.S.-dominated policy in Southwest Asia, with Israel’s threats of launching a broader war against Iran with the implicit approval of the U.S., is encouraging some in Iran to question their nation’s policy when it comes to nuclear deterrence. According to a report in Asharq al-Awsat international newspaper, there is a large uptick in public debate over the issue in Iran. This follows the news that 39 parliamentarians wrote a letter to the Supreme National Security Council last week calling for Iran to revise its nuclear doctrine.
Asharq al-Awsat reports that Deputy Hassanali Akhlaghi Amiri—one of the MPs who signed the letter—called in a recent session of parliament on the Supreme National Security Council to urgently rethink Iran’s defense doctrine. He asked, “Why do you limit yourselves to just condemning Israel’s actions? Are you afraid? Is life so precious that you accept humiliation?”
According to the report, Amiri said that revising the fatwa against nuclear weapons should consider current circumstances and be presented to the Supreme Leader.
