U.S. Dockworkers Strike East Coast and Gulf Ports; Shock to Import-Dependent U.S. Economy

Some 45,000 dockworkers represented by the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) struck ports today from Maine to Texas, whose interests are represented by the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX). This is the first such mass port action they have taken since 1977, and the 14 ports affected are among the busiest in the nation—Boston, New York/New Jersey, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Norfolk, Wilmington, Charleston, Savannah, Jacksonville, Miami, Tampa, Mobile, New Orleans, and Houston. Approximately $2 billion worth of goods flow through those ports daily, according to CBS News today.

Dockworkers also went on strike on Sept. 30 in Montreal, and the grain terminal workers at the port in Vancouver, Canada, went on strike on Sept. 24.
