In a new article released Oct. 13, Germany’s Der Spiegel reports that Kyiv is now considering peace options that include losses in its territory. “For the first time since the Russian invasion in February 2022, scenarios are being seriously discussed in the Ukrainian capital in which the country refrains from completely reconquering its occupied territories” it reports, adding: “In Kyiv, there is a lively discussion about the West German model.”
This article reflects the growing recognition that Ukraine is losing the war and has no hope of launching a supposed counteroffensive next year. “The optimism that the Ukrainian advance on Russian territory near Kursk in August had triggered among many in the country has evaporated,” Der Spiegel reports. “The soldiers are exhausted, society is tired of war. There is increasing criticism of the president.”
