On Oct. 14, UN Acting Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Joyce Msuya condemned what she called “atrocities” in a statement on the Israeli airstrike that day against Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza. The military assault caused a fire on the hospital grounds where displaced families were living in tents, resulting in four people being burned to death and scores of other people suffering severe burns. The majority of dead and injured were women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Msuya’s statement continues, “Just hours earlier, another strike on a school-turned-shelter in Nuseirat killed more than 20 people and injured scores of others, according to local sources. There really is no safe place in Gaza for people to go.”
