U.S. Strategic Command announced yesterday the start of its annual nuclear command and control exercise, Global Thunder 25. The exercise “Global Thunder 25 (GT25) involves personnel throughout the strategic enterprise, including USSTRATCOM components and subordinate units,” Stratcom said in a press release. “The purpose of GT25 is to enhance nuclear readiness and ensure a safe, secure, and effective strategic deterrent force.”

“In addition to U.S. personnel, GT25 will involve key allied and NATO partners, including personnel from the United Kingdom, who will integrate into senior leadership teams and work across a broad spectrum of areas offering policy support and operational insight,” it went on. “As in previous years, Global Thunder 25 will include an increase in bomber and other aircraft flights throughout the exercise.” No other details were provided, such as when the exercise concludes.

It should be noted that NATO’s Steadfast Noon exercises are also occurring, and will run until Oct. 30. NATO explicitly identifies these exercises as “an important test of the Alliance’s nuclear deterrent and sends a clear message to any adversary that NATO will protect and defend all Allies.”
