The Indian Foreign Ministry confirmed late in the day Oct. 22 that Indian Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping will hold a bilateral meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 23, on the sidelines of the BRICS summit, with the exact time and logistics still being worked out. Indian media reported that a joint statement is expected after the meeting.
This will be the first formal meeting between the two since a 2020 border clash led to a sharp freeze in their relations. The announcement was not unexpected, after the Foreign Ministries of both countries confirmed this week that an agreement had finally been reached, which essentially restores the pre-2020-clash border arrangements. The agreement was announced first by India’s External Affairs Ministry; today, Chinese Foreign Ministry Press Spokesman Lin Jian reported that “resolutions on issues concerning the border area” had been reached. He added that “China commends the progress made and will continue working with India for the sound implementation of these resolutions.”
