Although New Zealand has not officially decided to join the AUKUS nuclear agreement with Australia, the U.K., and the U.S., discussion about it is ongoing. Wang Xiaolong, China’s Ambassador to New Zealand said in an interview with Radio New Zealand released on Nov. 27: “If that is allowed to happen, it will raise serious questions about the integrity of the [nuclear] Non-Proliferation Treaty regime.” She quoted another analyst that “any country that joins AUKUS will inevitably be perceived as positioning itself against China. For New Zealand, this would mean a severe impact on its comprehensive strategic partnership with China, even altering the very nature of this relationship.”
