The COP29 climate summit, taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan from Nov. 11-22, has been going the way of most colonial attempts to stop the modern industrial advancement of countries of the Global South: south!
In his address to the opening session on Tuesday, Nov. 12, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev slammed the West: “Unfortunately double standards, a habit to lecture other countries and political hypocrisy became kind of modus operandi for some politicians, state-controlled NGOs and fake news media in some Western countries,” referring to, among other things, the fact that in July 2022, the EU contracted with Azerbaijan to double its gas deliveries to Europe, in an attempt to shift off from dependency of Russian gas.
Oil and gas, Aliyev said, are “a gift of the God”—just the same as any other natural resource.
“Countries should not be blamed for having them and should not be blamed for bringing these resources to the market because the market needs them,” he proclaimed. “The people need them.”
