Energy consumption in Germany is expected to reach a new low this year, mainly due to the weak economy and less so to consumption saving efforts. This is according to a forecast by the Working Group on Energy Balances (AGEB), which has been compiling energy data since reunification in 1990.
According to the AGEB, consumption is expected to fall by a further 1.7% year-on-year to 10,453 petajoules (PJ). This would mean that energy consumption would be almost 30% below the 1990 figure of 14,905 petajoules—the lowest level since then. The alarming figure indicates the scope of shrinking industrial output particularly in the past few years.
