The European Commission has set up a “Task Force Trump” with the mandate of studying countermoves to expected actions by the new U.S. President, such as a step back in climate policies, a disengagement in Ukraine and a trade war, according to the Italian daily La Stampa. The Italian daily interviews Eurocrats in dismay who say that “Now is the time to take our destiny back into our own hands.” “Europe must wake up and assume its role as a power,” says French socialist Aurore Lalucq, chair of the European Parliament’s Economic Affairs Committee. “I am afraid for Ukraine,” admits German Green MEP Anna Cavazzini, who heads the Internal Market Committee. “Does Europe count less and less for America,” wonders former French minister Nathalie Loiseau, now a Liberal MEP.

Those who are now having a good time inside the EU are Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and other “sovereignists” whom Brussels, backed by Paris and Berlin, has attempted to destroy, including by sabotaging meetings under Hungary’s current rotating presidency of the EU Council.
