Tens of thousands of farmers, many in their tractors, along with children in toy tractors, filled the streets of London on Nov. 19 to protest a new inheritance law which would accelerate the collapse of family farming in the U.K., already in danger over both low income and green policies forcing farmland to be taken out of crops to “save the environment.”
The new bill would impose on medium-size farms inheritance taxes that would be far out of reach for most farmers. Rather than passing farms on to their families, as has been done for many decades with no inheritance taxes, farmers will be forced to sell large portions just to pay the tax—or simply sell out completely and leave agriculture.
