As part of its coverage and participation in the APEC summit in Lima, Peru, CGTN produced a half-hour video, “2024 APEC: From China to Peru,” which beautifully discusses the cultural connections of Peru and China, going back centuries, and, more generally, the importance of cultural dialogue and exchange.
The video opens by following interviewer Tian Wei as she is given a tour of Peru’s National Museum of Archaeology, Anthropology and History by its director, Rafael Varón Gabai. She then sits down for a discussion with three experts in Peruvian history and Chinese-Peruvian cultural connections. The group reviewed the history of Chinese immigrants in Peru, many of whom came through the maritime connection now more firmly established in the newly inaugurated Chancay deep-water port just north of Lima, which will be a hub for all of South America to reach China and Asia more broadly. With the Chancay Port, it was said, Peru will be a “gateway to a new era” of cooperation with China, led by young people.
