Ghana Completed First Section of a National Railway Project

Ghana President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo commissioned the first completed section of a national railway project on Nov. 22. The 97 km stretch of completed railway connects the coastal city of Tema to the city of Mpakadan to the north. Over the next decade the 4,500 km railway will be completed in several phases and establish a very effective railway network, connecting all the major cities and regions throughout the country.

It is a component of the first phase of the 1,000 km Ghana-Burkina Faso Railway Interconnectivity Project, which will build a railway line between the Port of Tema in Ghana and Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso. The standard gauge railway is being built by the Indian Afcons company, which began construction of the railway in 2018, financed by a $440 million loan from the India Export-Import Bank. The state of the art passenger train sets come from Poland.
