Bloomberg reports statements from India’s Congress Party leader Rahul Gandhi, that “it’s established in America” that India’s leading construction magnate Gautam Adani has broken U.S. and Indian law, and “I wonder why he is roaming free in this country” of India. The Congress-led opposition immediately demanded debate about Adani and “the Prime Minister’s friendship with Adani” when the winter session of Parliament opened in Delhi Nov. 25, reported Bloomberg. Prime Minister Narendra Modi (BJP) was present in Parliament and warned the opposition lawmakers not to try to disrupt it.
The Congress Party’s momentum against Modi, from its doubling of its representation in the June national elections, was brought up short, however, when Nov. 23-24 state elections in the major critical state of Maharashtra were swept in a landslide by Modi’s BJP. The parties in Modi’s coalition have made no statements, and a BJP spokesman said only, “Law will take its course.” Bloomberg confidently began: “Prime Minister Narendra Modi will find it increasingly difficult to distance himself from the latest controversy erupting around Gautam Adani.”
