In a one-hour video interview on Nov. 21 with Die Weltwoche (Switzerland), former German Bundeswehr Chief of Staff Gen. Harald Kujat (ret.)—known for his years-long opposition to escalative Western geopolitics, warned that Europe and Germany must stand up to prevent the Ukraine war becoming the “central catastrophe of the 21st century,” as World War I was such a catastrophe of the 20th century. Germany must have the courage not to become drawn into a war against Russia out of loyalty to Ukraine, as it was in 1914 when it did do so out of loyalty to Austria-Hungary.
The recklessness with which the Americans escalate a war in Europe far from their own territory, must be countered by European leaders, particularly the German Chancellor, telling the Americans that it is not in the European interest to get drawn into a war with Russia, Kujat said. Chancellor Gerhard Schröder told the United States in 2003 that he opposed the war on Iraq, it is possible to tell the Americans, they may not like it but have to accept it, said Kujat, who ended his career in 2005 as Chairman of NATO’s Military Committee.
