Nine Countries Drafting Resolution To Expel Israel From UN

A group of nations is working to draft a resolution that, if passed through the United Nations General Assembly, aims to expel Israel from the UN. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim discussed the process in an address to the Malaysian parliament on Nov. 4, and said, “The draft resolution is in the negotiation process and we will study if Israel can be removed as a member of [the] UN if there is violation of international laws.”

The move appears to have been made in the wake of Israel’s decision to ban the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) from Palestinian territory—a move which is effectively a death sentence for hundreds of thousands of people there. Anwar said that the draft resolution will call for an advisory opinion from the UN’s International Court of Justice on whether this decision by violates Israel’s obligations. “Malaysia will ensure that the agenda is heard and given attention so that the atrocities of the Israeli regime can be stopped, besides allowing critical aid to reach the Palestinian people at a time when the massacre continues to worsen,” he added.
