In a significant diplomatic development, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a meeting on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Lima, Peru. Global Times reports that the meeting “signaled a potential warming of relations between the two nations, which have been strained in recent years. Key topics included the security situation on the Korean Peninsula and accelerating progress on a free trade agreement (FTA) between the two countries.”
Xi described the current state of China-South Korea relations as progressing steadily, highlighting significant shifts in global and regional dynamics since their last meeting in 2022. The Biden Administration has been frantically forging a military alliance between the U.S., Japan, and South Korea against China, although those involved focus much of the discussion on the need to counter North Korea’s military power and their growing ties with Russia.
