Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico today said that it is senseless and counterproductive to lift the restrictions on the use of U.S.-supplied long-range missiles against targets deep inside Russian territory is senseless and counterproductive, RT reported. “This is an unprecedented escalation of tensions” and an attempt to undermine the policies of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and “frustrate and delay” any peace talks.
Fico evidently could not help but add a comment about the rapid and sycophantish response of some EU member states, welcoming the escalation. He stated: “This is simply a confirmation that the European Union is not capable of formulating fundamental foreign policy positions on its own, and that the West wants the war in Ukraine to continue at any cost.”
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda boasted on X yesterday: “The day has come! Ukraine can now target military sites in Russia using long-range missiles. This is a decisive moment in fight against the aggressor Russia.” He added that “peace cannot be achieved through weakness.” However, Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis worried that it wasn’t enough. He said that he’s not “opening the champagne” yet, since he wasn’t sure enough restrictions had been lifted, nor whether enough U.S. weapons were left in Ukraine to make a difference.
Fico may have had in mind the yesterday’s report in Le Figaro that both France and the U.K., following the U.S., immediately granted similar permission for their long-range SCALP and Storm Shadow missiles to strike deep into Russia. Le Figaro did not mention any limitation to strikes in the immediate Kursk region.
