Washington Post on Netanyahu’s ‘Gift to Trump’ of Lebanon 60-Day Ceasefire

A Washington Post article based on “three present and former Israeli officials briefed on the meeting” says that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer had offered U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, at Mar-a-Lago, an immediate-term announcement of a Lebanon ceasefire for 60 days which would supposedly be turned into a settlement by Trump after his inauguration.

The terms of such a ceasefire as coming from the Post’s Israeli sources—which likely include Dermer—would be that Hezbollah must withdraw all forces to territory north of the Litani River; that the Lebanese Armed Forces take over the zone from the border to the Litani, “supervised by the United States and United Kingdom” (presumably moving UNIFIL peacekeeping forces out); that Israeli citizens return to evacuated towns in northern Israel—and, it would seem evident, that Israel would have the latitude to resume the war and re-invade Lebanon after 60 days, putting pressure on a U.S.-arranged “solution.”
