Academician and outstanding scientist in the field of thermonuclear fusion Evgeny Velikhov has died at the age of 90, which was reported to Izvestia today by the press service of the Kurchatov Institute National Research Center.
Velikhov was born on February 2, 1935, in Moscow, graduated from the Physics Department of Moscow State University, and from 1961 worked at the Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy. He was also among the leaders of the liquidation of the consequences of the 1986 Chernobyl accident. Velikhov was awarded three Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and the Order of Courage for his participation in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl accident. He was a full Cavalier of the Order “For Merit to the Fatherland.”
