If you’re waiting for democracy in Syria, don’t hold your breath.

Organizing elections there may take four years, as it would require a comprehensive population census, Syria’s current leader Ahmed al-Sharaa told Al Arabiya on Dec. 29. “The process of writing the constitution may take about three years, and we look forward to a constitution that lasts for the longest possible period, and this is a difficult and lengthy task.”

The leader said that his organization, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), will be disbanded.
