German Chancellor Reiterates Opposition to Taurus Missiles for Ukraine

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated in a Berlin speech in Nov. 30 that Germany should not make reckless decisions about support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. He referred to Friedrich Merz, the Christian Democratic Union’s candidate for chancellor in next year’s federal elections, as reported by RT on Dec. 1.

Merz is on record supporting the deployment of Taurus missiles to Ukraine. He says that if Russia refuses to stop attacking civilian targets in Ukraine, then Ukraine should be free to use already-delivered weapons without restrictions, the Kyiv Independent reported on Oct. 18. This was taken from an interview Merz gave to German N-TV on Oct. 14. Merz said “and the second step would be to supply the Taurus missiles. Then it is up to (Russian President Vladimir) Putin to decide how far he wants to escalate this war.”
