TASS cited Al Jazeera reporting yesterday that “Mohammed al-Bashir, the head of the so-called Syrian Salvation Government (SSG) in Idlib, is expected to be selected as the head of Syria’s new transitional government.” Before that, he had been the SSG’s minister of development and humanitarian affairs from 2022 to 2023.

Al-Bashir was born in Idlib province, in northwestern Syria, where Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) was the dominant force, making it likely that HTS was instrumental in al-Bashir’s appointment.
