Laureano Ortega Murillo, Special Representative of the President of Nicaragua for Russian Affairs, told TASS today that Nicaragua has invited Russia to participate in building a new canal from the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean. “The construction of a new Caribbean port is already underway. We are now working to increase the capacity of the existing port on the coast of the Pacific Ocean [Puerto Corinto]. After the work is complete, we will proceed with the construction of a new canal. We expect that the project will steadily move forward in the coming years and, of course, we invite our Russian friends to join it,” reported TASS.

On Nov. 19, 2024, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega unveiled plans for a 445 km interoceanic waterway that would provide an alternative to the congested Panama Canal, speaking in a presentation to Chinese investors at the 17th China-Latin America and the Caribbean Business Summit in Managua, reported bne Intellinews.
