Romanian Election Twist: Not Russia, but Ruling Party Behind TikTok Campaign

A bombshell report published by Romanian news site Snoop reveals that the supposedly Russia-directed election interference that led to the annulment of the first round of the presidential election was actually paid for not by Moscow but by a party in the country’s governing coalition.

Independent candidate Călin Georgescu won the first round of Romania’s presidential election on Nov. 24, running on a campaign that included an anti-war stance.

But on Dec. 6, just two days before the second round election, Romania’s Constitutional Court annulled the results of the first round. Why? The court said that “the electoral process for the election of the President of Romania was vitiated throughout its entire duration and at all stages by multiple irregularities and violations of electoral legislation that distorted the free and fair nature of the vote.” This was widely reported as being due to claims of Russian interference.

But Snoop’s reporting reveals that the Romanian tax authorities (ANAF) have determined that the messaging campaign was paid for by the National Liberal Party (PNL), one of the two parties forming Romania’s current government!

If Snoop’s reporting is accurate, it thus appears that the PNL, which wanted to cancel the election, itself financed the social media campaign used as the excuse for the cancellation!

There is a chance to reverse course on the election. On Dec. 23, 2024, the Court of Appeal of Bucharest will decide on the admissibility of a legal action launched by Elena Radu and other lawyers together with ex-candidate Călin Georgescu to remedy the anti-democratic annulment. Alexandra Bellea-Noury conducted an interview with this well-known lawyer for publication by EIR.
