German Chancellor Olaf Scholz arrived on a night train in Kiev this early morning for a surprise visit, announcing on his arrival that Ukraine can be assured of military support which already this December will feature €650 million of new hardware and ammunition delivered. This is however already included in the €28 billion which Germany has so far delivered or promised since February 2022.
Whereas that is not surprising at all, the meeting which Scholz is to have with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy today may generate something new, in the context of Scholz’s recent references of “assistance and diplomacy” as being his policy, including his categoric refusal to deliver the “Taurus” to Kiev, which he reiterated just on Saturday.
