South Korea’s parliament voted in favor of the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol on Dec. 14. In South Korea, that means he is suspended from his duties. The Constitutional Court will decide whether he is reinstated or permanently thrown out of office. He also faces criminal charges.
Apparently, between the time of the vote and the delivery of official papers, Yoon convened the National Security Council and called for maintaining a “watertight readiness posture” against North Korea’s provocations. It is unclear whether he plans to attend such a meeting.
The Court has up to 180 days to decide. The political situation is uncertain. Over the last week, both the Defense and Interior Ministers have resigned. Both the Justice Minister and the Chief State Auditor have also been impeached. Prime Minister Han Duck-soo serves as the acting President until the Court decides Yoon’s fate.
