South Korea’s opposition party, according to Yonhap news agency, plans to hold a vote this Dec. 7 to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol for his shocking declaration of martial law on Tuesday evening, Dec. 3. It would need the backing of at least eight of Yoon’s People’s Power Party (PPP) members to join with the opposition for the motion to succeed. Should he be impeached, Yoon would be suspended, pending a verdict by the Constitutional Court. If the judges confirm the impeachment, a new election will be held in South Korea within two months.
PPP floor leader Choo Kyung-ho told a live-streamed party meeting: “All 108 lawmakers of the People Power party will stay united to reject the president’s impeachment.” The head of PPP, Han Dong-hoon, explained to reporters that by opposing the impeachment, his party is “not trying to defend the president’s unconstitutional martial law.”
A poll yesterday of 504 South Korean citizens over the age of 18, [conducted by the Realmeter agency]( https://tass.com/world/1882501), found that 73.6% supported the impeachment of Yoon, with 24% opposed, and only 2.4% undecided. Further, a full 69.5% believe that Yoon’s action may be considered treason.
