Italian defense magazine Analisi Difesa editor Gianandrea Gaiani warned that the jihadist offensive in Syria is connected to the global conflict between U.S./NATO and Russia. “About the role of the United States, the timing of the jihadist offensive seems to be among the ‘tail twists’ of the Biden Administration, intent on leaving a legacy of as many crises as possible to manage,” Gaiani wrote. “It is no coincidence that after Donald Trump’s election victory, the Ukrainians were given the green light to strike Russian territory with ATACMS ballistic missiles, anti-government riots erupted in Georgia (where volunteers who fought on the Ukrainian front are reportedly returning to bolster the insurgents), and the jihadist offensive in Syria was unleashed. ….
“Thus, the Biden Administration does not seem to have missed an opportunity to contribute to the destabilization of this region as well by affecting the interests of Russia and Iran, perhaps also with the aim of opening a new front to be included in future negotiations for the end of hostilities in Ukraine.”
Gaiani is of the opinion that the activation of communications between U.S. and Russian forces deployed in Syria is evidence that the Biden administration is taking advantage of the six weeks remaining before the Trump inauguration.
