In yet another clear provocation, Taiwan President Lai Ching-te was in Hawaii over the weekend, supposedly as a “stopover” on his way to visit the three South Pacific island nations which still recognize Taiwan rather than Beijing—Marshall Islands, Tuvalu, and Palau.
Speaking at a dinner on Nov. 30 attended by state officials, members of Congress, and Taiwanese residents of Hawaii, he added that a visit that day to Pearl Harbour had served as a reminder of “the importance of ensuring peace.” “Peace is priceless, and war has no winners. We have to fight, fight together to prevent war,” he said.
