Biden Administration Steps Up Sanctions on Its Way Out the Door

The Biden White House is unleashing one final burst of sanctions and other economic restrictions against China and Russia in its final days in office.

Today the State Department announced new sanctions on almost 250 “enablers of Russia’s illegal war against Ukraine,” in an act which they explicitly say builds on the Jan 10 sanctions against Russia’s energy sector. The new sanctions are reportedly aimed at stopping sanctions evasion, and will primarily affect companies in China. These actions are intended to “disrupt support for Russia’s military-industrial base and curtail the Kremlin’s ability to exploit the international financial system and generate revenue,” the statement says.
