Bill Introduced To Eliminate Soda from SNAP Benefits

People receiving SNAP benefits will no longer be able to use them to purchase sugary carbonated drinks if the Funding is Zero for Zero Nutrition Options (FIZZ-NO) Act passes the House. Introduced by Congressman Keith Self, the bill would include soda along with alcohol on the list of items that cannot be purchased through Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits. The current text of the bill shows that it would apply to artificially sweetened beverages as well.

Congressman Self points to the U.S. obesity epidemic as a reason for no longer providing government assistance for purchase of these drinks.
