Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met in Beijing on Jan. 27. Their meeting continued the process of improving relations between the two countries, that accelerated when Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the recent BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia on Oct. 24, 2024, as the Jan. 27 Global Times reports.

The Global Times reports that “During the meeting with Misri … Wang said China and India should seize the opportunity to meet each other halfway, explore more substantive measures, and commit themselves to mutual understanding, mutual support and mutual achievement, rather than mutual suspicion, alienation and mutual depletion. The improvement and development of China-Indian relations are fully in line with the fundamental interests of the two countries and peoples, [and] conducive to safeguarding the legitimate rights and interests of the Global South countries …. Wang told Misri.”

Global Times reported that “According to a readout from the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Misri said that India and China have carried out a series of beneficial dialogues and communications in accordance with the consensus reached at the Kazan meeting between the leaders of the two countries, appropriately managing and resolving their differences and promoting the relaunch of practical cooperation in various fields.” Prior to Misri’s visit to China, Wang Yi had met with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in November, and in December with the Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, in Beijing.

Indian Foreign Secretary Misri also met on Jan. 27 with China’s Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong. Their meeting involved an agreement of multiple points, including, according to the Jan. 28 release from the Chinese Foreign Ministry and/or the Jan. 27 release from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs.
