Chinese UN Representative Warns Against Syria's Inclusion of Uyghur Terrorist Group

Chinese UN Representative Fu Cong made a statement to the UN Security Council hearing on Syria Jan. 8, where he warned the new Syrian government against its inclusion of a member from the East Turkistan Islamic Movement. The Chinese representative claimed that Syria has appointed members of the group into their new military.

“No matter how the domestic situation in Syria develops, the bottom line of zero tolerance for terrorism cannot be changed,” Fu said. “It is reported that the Syrian army has recently granted senior military ranks to a number of foreign terrorist fighters, including the head of a Council-listed terrorist organization, the Turkistan Islamic Party, also known as the East Turkestan Islamic Movement. China is greatly concerned about this. We call on Syria to fulfill its counter-terrorism obligations and to prevent any terrorist forces from using the Syrian territory to threaten the security of other countries,” the representative said.
