Benjamin Netanyahu announcement of a “last minute crisis.” Credit: The Prime Minister of Israel.

It didn’t take long after the ceasefire deal was announced for the sabotage potential to raise its ugly head. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement this morning claiming that a “last-minute crisis” with Hamas was holding up Israeli approval of the deal. Netanyahu’s office said his Cabinet would not meet to approve the agreement until Hamas backs down. “Hamas is reneging on the understandings and creating a last-minute crisis that is preventing an agreement,” the prime minister’s office reportedly said in a statement, issuing it in both English and Hebrew. “The Israeli cabinet will not convene until the mediators notify Israel that Hamas has accepted all elements of the agreement.”

Izzat al-Rashq, a senior Hamas official, said the militant group “is committed to the ceasefire agreement, which was announced by the mediators.”
