Syria’s Ministry of Education ushered in the new year with an announcement that it was [planning reforms](announced) to the nation’s educational curricula. The New Arab reports on some of the proposed changes, which include removing references to the Assad family and also changes of a religious or historical nature. References to the Ottoman Empire’s rule of the area will no longer refer to it as “the brutal Ottoman authority.”
“After reviewing the amendments, it’s clear that, aside from removing signs of the criminal Assad regime, the remaining changes have a distinct religious tone,” remarks a Syrian journalist.
